So I’m reading Luke and I get to the story in Luke chapter 10 verse 38 where Jesus and the disciples visit the sisters, Mary and Martha.
In the story, Mary sits and listens at the feet of Jesus as He teaches, while her sister, Martha, is distracted in the kitchen trying to prepare dinner.
At times, we get so caught up in the details and the little stuff in this life that we actually begin to lose focus on the most important thing in front of us, Christ. And it’s crazy because Martha was preparing food FOR Jesus! She was preparing to serve the Messiah, the King of Kings, our Lord and Savior! Which is great, right?
However, at that moment, she felt like that was the most important thing to do. In fact, she felt that to be so important that she even confronted Jesus about it, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
Imagine! But listen to Jesus reply:
“My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all of these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Just like some or most of us on our walk. We get so caught up in ministry and serving and the “details” of life that we miss the bigger picture, the ONLY picture.
We need to get out of the kitchen of our lives and just sit at the feet of Jesus. I mean, where else would we rather be? And don’t get me wrong. It is great to be in ministry, to serve, in fact, we are called to serve.
Mark 10:45 says that even Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve others, and He is our example.
But best believe, if Jesus came to my house, I would be right there with Mary basking in His presence. We can order to-go later if needed!
Mary, get out of the kitchen!
And even after Jesus’ response, you would think Martha would get the picture, right?
I’ll get into that on a different shirt…
